It’s Not Your Grandma’s Hammered Aluminum — Uh, Yes It Is!

July 16th, 2008 . by admin

This is a treasure mom or gramma might have gotten as a wedding gift in the 30’s through the 50’s. Most of the really expensive pieces in this field were indeed hand hammered.

Items available in hammered aluminum range from ice buckets to coaster sets and bookends to ashtrays. In fact, most of these aluminum wares made their way into homes as wedding gifts from that period.

At one point there were several hundred companies producing this type of giftware. Most of them didn’t make it through the World War II era when all types of metal were scarce, according to Garage Sale & Flea Market Annual (Collector Books).

Names collectors tend to look for in this area are Arthur Armour, the Continental Silver Company, Everlast, Buenilum, Rodney Kent and Pamer-Smith. Some collectors focus on the wares of just one of these companies, while others prefer a certain pattern. Several pieces in this collection is a very popular one called Fruit and Flowers.

Some of the most popular pieces feature lifelike chrysanthemums, like those made by the Continental Silver Company, and the tulips decorating the surface of some Rodney Kent wares. The detail is and craftmanship is amazing.

You can still pick up oodles of aluminum on eBay for $25 or less per piece, plus the ever popular ’shipping’, although a nicely crafted ice bucket with stand can top out at more than $200.

Definitely has a WOW factor. Trays and plates and pitchers with wonderful hand-wrought handles and finials. Hand painted or decals from Americas best potteries. It’s all here in this fabulous collection of hammered aluminum goodies! Come see these in person at In Due Time!

The Best Furniture Contains History

July 13th, 2008 . by antique-collector

When most families think about making a new furniture purchase for their homes, whether it be for their living room, dining room, bedroom, office, or maybe just a display case or table, they visit a large retail store. The real beauty lives in a magnificent piece of Dreamworks Furniture and can be found right here at In Due Time Collectibles. The big retailers are now selling “solid wood” furniture that is really finger jointed pieces of hundreds of small pieces of wood, glued up into panels. That doesn’t even talk about particle board and pressed wood! Please check out the Dreamworks Furniture section on the main page of idtcollectibles.com. The furniture is made from old wood from old houses, old barns, etc., that are scheduled to be taken down. The advantage of this, is that old wood, SOLID WOOD, REAL WOOD, is  usually more dense and therefore stronger than new wood. So the next time you are looking for a new addition to your furniture collection please visit us here at In Due Time.

Nice Trip to the Dentist for A Lovely Shawnee Vase!

July 12th, 2008 . by admin

Well…at least that is what it FELT like! I received this dear little Shawnee vase, marked USA and it was encrusted with concrete-like hard water deposit. It was truly ugly. It not only looked like concrete, but it stuck to the vase hard like concrete!! I put the base of it in a saucer filled with liquid fabric softener and let it sit there for several days.

With an exacto knife, I began doing what I can only compare to taking plaque off of teeth. It took a little doing and a couple of fresh, sharp exactos, but I got that vase as clean as a whistle! I then filled it up with fabric softener to get the very hard ring on the inside soft enough to do the same thing. You know how good hind-sight is, but I failed to take a before picture! The final product is lovely!!

July 10th, 2008 . by antique-collector

What an impression a beautiful piece of antique furniture can make. An old dresser decorated in old frames and vintage things can really make a room light up and keep in memories from old times. Maybe an old brush set or jewelry box. Or just to stand in front of the tall beautiful mirrors most vintage pieces have is just what you want. Furniture made back when is just what you need to put that extra sparkle into your room. Nothing beats the antiques!

July 9th, 2008 . by antique-collector

Remember when Lanterns were everywhere you turn at night. The beautiful glow they put forth has now been forgotten. Seems now everywhere you turn there’s street lights and residential lights. What a beautiful glow the old style lanterns bring us. Sometimes the new remakes take weird oils or citronella. Where can you look to find the real old style lanterns you remember? At In Due Time that’s where. Please visit us soon!
